Rail Road Products - Air Dryer

Air dryers for Locomotives

Compressed air is normally fully saturated with water vapour. Air dryers are used to remove water vapour from compressed air. Heatless desiccant air dryers are the most apt solution for drying air suitable for Compressed air used in locomotives owing to their inherent reliablity and being rugged in nature.

The compressed air in locomotive is used mainly for air brakes and accessories. This dryer has to withstand the vibrations, temperature, exposure to rain etc. as it is mounted out side the locomotive.

How it works

Drying Cycle

The moist air from the compressor goes through the coalescing filter. Here, water & oil coalesce and purge through the auto drain valve. The relatively clean air with water vapour passing through the aluminium drying tower filled with desiccant gets completely dried and then passes through a built in after filter. The desiccant fines from the towers are completely removed, and clean, dry air is let out through the outlet port for use.

Regeneration Cycle

During the regeneration cycle, the sudden depressurisation brings out water molecules strapped in the Desiccant pores to the surface of the beads. A small portion of dry compressed air from the drying tower then passes over the desiccant through the regeneration orifice built in the Top Block. This results in complete regeneration of the Desiccant.

Salient Features

  • Designed for locomotive use: Meets all Environmental and functional specifications for the Railroad industry.
  • Non-volatile memory system: The dryer is completely switched off when the compressor is off and restarts where the cycle was stopped. This increases the life of the dryer.
  • Automatic Purge control valve: Adjusts purge air depending on the compressed air flow and pressure.
  • Fixed Volume Automatic Drain valve: Drains condensate without wasting much of compressed air. It has a fail safe design.
  • Optimised design: To meet Input-output dewpoint depression requirement.
  • Desiccant health indicator for each desiccant tower.
  • Pre-filter health indicator.
  • Low MTTR (Mean Time To Repair).
  • High MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures).
  • All aluminium construction for corrosion-free, long life.
  • Slide-In mount: The dryer can be slid in and out for service and installation in minutes when installed in the mounting bracket (e.g. Trident MB1).
  • Dewpoint depression of 30°C at design airflow and 15°C at the worst case of airflow and ambient temperature.
  • Low-pressure drop of 3% of inlet pressure at design airflow.
